Teenage punk rockers – The Regrettes

Can’t legally buy alcohol in most countries, can’t vote in most countries, but they’ve already played most of the late night shows on US television and I believe toured in Europe (they are from Los Angeles, California).

Let’s see if they make it big. They will tour the UK in May before touring more in the US.

A few videos, starting with Seashore (some strong language included):

Hey Now:

And a cover I quite like (and how I discovered them via a YouTube recommendation):

  1. There’s a lot wrong with the YouTube recommendation algorithm, especially with all the extreme videos it seems to push. Plenty of articles in the press about that. At the same time it can have its good side: Last year I discovered the Regrettes through it. This year I’ve found Jade Bird through it. I think the first song was this one:

This week this song and video followed (with a 61 year old stuntwoman doing the driving):

Her debut album is coming out on 19/Apr/2019, I’m going to pre-order soon. Here’s an interesting interview with three songs:

  2. That went quickly, the third and final entry of this short series is already here. After The Mysterines, Dream Wife we last but by no means least come to The Big Moon (Wikipedia entry) from London. Of these three bands I believe they’ve been around the longest, so I’m rather late to the party. They certainly make brilliant videos. Let’s start with one where they play every single role, Sucker:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMsTx0Zs4ZY?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
The Big Moon – SuckerThey get rather colourful in Cupid, must have been fun making that, despite the mess:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6t3vNfl85E?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
The Big Moon – CupidSilent Movie Susie is a beautiful stop motion video with dolls taking on all roles. There’s also a cameo of the band, both as dolls and real people. Can you spot the previous video they are quoting?

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74YEYP7bwUI?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
The Big Moon – Silent Movie SusieFrom their second album is Your Light. With lots of cycling. And puppets. What more could you want?

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OijD72t4XY?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
The Big Moon – Your LightTo close a cover version. I discovered The Regrettes via their appearance on The A.V. Club, interesting to see that The Big Moon also played a cover at The A.V. Club, Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler from 1983:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHbLEI2_aVc?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
The Big Moon serves up a stellar rendition of “Total Eclipse Of The Heart”I hope you enjoyed this little series and maybe even found a band or two you’ll like. Maybe let me know via the comments?

  3. Over the last two years the two main new bands I listen to were (and still are) The Regrettes and Skating Polly. In addition to them I also discovered Jade Bird. A few weeks ago I decided to go on a hunt for a few new bands (new to me, not necessarily new to the scene) I might like. That hunt turned out very successful as I’ve found three bands (all British) that have been on heavy rotation since and I expect will remain for some time. So I thought I share some of their music, starting with The Mysterines from Liverpool (introduction in the NME), opening with Take Control:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt_xhaTc210?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
The Mysterines – Take ControlMoving on to Love’s Not Enough:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-Ti1v4w82k?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
The Mysterines – Love’s Not EnoughA quite fast version of Gasoline:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o_YMAOEsfg?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
The Mysterines – GasolineTo close just Lia Metcalfe on her own with an acoustic guitar (incl a much slower version of Gasoline):

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VDSrZxNAzI?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-GB&autohide=2&wmode=transparent&w=474&h=267%5D
Lia Metcalfe (The Mysterines) – NME Home SessionsI hope you enjoyed the music, more in the second part to follow tomorrow.
